The Grocery Store Save

How to save some cash at the grocery store

If money is tight, one easy way to save some cash is by cutting back on dining out. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American household spends about $3,000 per year on eating outside of the home. That’s a lot of cash being thrown around. With your focus on eating at home, there are ways to save there, too. Here are some tips for making the most out of grocery shopping.

  • Save with Sales. Before you meal plan, check what food is on sale and try to base some lunches or dinners around those items. Grocery stores constantly have discounted products, so there’s bound to be plenty of options. Your freezer is your best friend. Stock up on things you like when it’s their turn to be marked down.
  • Add Some Bulk. Head to the bulk bins in your grocery store. It’s often cheaper to buy items there — like rice and beans — than purchasing them prepackaged.
  • Sign Up. Many grocery stores offer customer loyalty programs. For example, Whole Foods recently launched an app that gives customers discounts. All you have to do is sign up, scan the card/app and the savings roll in.
  • Go Generic. One easy way to save at the grocery store is to stick to generic, or store brand, items. Is the fancy peanut butter really $3 better than the store brand? Probably not.
  • Avoid Premade. Premade foods are convenient, but ultimately quite costly. Instead of buying diced veggies, buy them whole and cut them yourself.
  • Try Veggies. As US News reports, it can be expensive to eat meat. A pound of ground beef costs $4.17 per pound, while a pound of dried beans costs just $1.34 per pound. Cut back on meat to save some cash.
