Travel Insurance: Is it Really Worth it?

Travel Insurance: Is it Really Worth it?

When to buy travel insurance.

Going on vacation should be a fun thing. You don’t want to worry about anything happening that might not be fun. Perhaps that’s one reason you’re considering travel insurance. Here are some times you might want insurance, and some times you might not.

When to Buy It

  • International Travel. You will likely want to buy vacation insurance for any international trips you have planned. That’s because, typically, these trips are more expensive than a vacation in the States. You also will likely have planned this trip far in advance, giving ample time for something, anything, to go wrong. Consider purchasing comprehensive coverage if you’re traveling abroad.
  • Medical Costs. Far-reaching, remote area vacations are fun, but if something happens and someone gets hurt or sick, medical help can be difficult to locate. And because of that, it is usually quite expensive. Again, consider comprehensive coverage to cover some medical costs.

When Not to Buy It

  • Travel in the States. When traveling in the States, you likely don’t need travel insurance. The costs are lower, and you probably planned your trip not too far in advance.
  • Card Covering. Many credit cards come with travel insurance baked in. Before you book your vacation, check your credit card and see what it covers.
