Quick Tips for Filing Taxes

Tax deadlines you should know.

Tax day is fast approaching, so it’s crunch time.

For most people, the tax filing deadline is April 15. If you need extra time, you must also ask by that date. Here are some other important dates you should know now that tax season has heated up.

The June Deadline

If you are paying in estimated taxes, June 16 is the day you must file your second quarter tax payment. Estimated taxes mean just that:

  • Calculate how much income you’re going to make each year.
  • Estimate how much you’ll owe.
  • You then make quarterly payments instead of one yearly payment.

The September Deadline

Your third quarter estimated tax payment is due by September 15.

The October Deadline

If you filed for an extension in April, the extension deadline is October 15th.

The January Deadline

The final payment for the Fourth quarter of 2025 is due January 15, 2026.

What Happens if You Miss Filing and Owe Money?

If you miss filing and owe the IRS money, you need to file as fast as possible. Every day your return is late, the IRS can charge late filing interest, late filing fees, and a “failure to pay” penalty until you make your payment.

Do One Thing: File your taxes as soon as you can. To make this easier, make a goal of filing early so that you don’t feel panicked when April arrives each year.
