What to Do With Stale Gift Cards

How to get paid for unused gift cards.

According to a recent report, 60 percent of American adults have at least one gift card they have no plans of using. If you count yourself among those people, it’s time to take action.

Don’t Waste Money

Letting a gift card sit around is a literal waste of money. Thankfully, there are ways to get some cash for your plastic or egift. Here are two of the best ways to get paid for a gift card that you don’t want.

Raise

Raise is an app/site that allows you to sell virtual gift cards.

To sell your card do the following:

  • Go to the site or download the mobile app.
  • Enter the information (gift card balance and store).
  • Raise will show you what similar gift cards have sold for, so you can set a competitive price.
  • Once your card is sold, you get the money minus a 15 percent fee for Raise.

Raise typically pays you within five business days of the card being sold. Raise caps gift card balances at $2,000.

CardCash

Unlike Raise, CardCash doesn’t allow you to set your price. Instead, the site sets its price according to the card’s balance and the attached retailer. For example, let’s say you have a Target gift card for $200. CardCash might offer you $120 for it. If you like that deal, you accept and CardCash deposits your money into your bank account within two business days. CardCash limits gift card balances to $500.

Do One Thing: If you have an unused gift card, find a reputable app or site to sell it.
